Memory and Objects

It's so cool to see the changes and development happening so rapidly and clearly. There's a great book called "On The Night You Were Born," that we have been reading to Anjali. It's a little longer than a lot of the other books we have, so it doesn't always keep her attention through the whole book. But only after a few days, Anjali has grown fond of that book.

A few days ago, before a nap, she reached toward her bookshelf and asked for a book. I grabbed one that we often read, but she continued reaching and saying she wanted a book from the shelf. I grabbed another, but she continued. Then I grabbed "On The Night You Were Born," and she was happy. She sat on my lap and we read the book before her nap.

When she woke up, the very first thing she did was reach for the shelf and ask for that book. Her memory and recognition of objects is growing so quickly! Her love of books seems to be growing as well...

Signing Ball

Yesterday Anjali started signing "ball." She picked up her ball when she was playing with mama, and made the sign. Today, out of the blue, papa said, "Anjali, where's your ball?" Anjali knew exactly what he was talking about. She walked right over to her ball and brought it to him. A few minutes later, she sign "ball," and then picked it up again.

Drinking From A Glass

We spent the afternoon with our friends Radha and Uma the other day. Anjali watched Uma drink water from a glass--a big person glass. She would pick up the glass with two hands, from the floor. She drank from the glass and then gently put it back down on the floor.

The next day, papa and Anjali were having lunch. Papa offered her water in her small, green silicone cup, but Anjali pointed somewhere else on the table. So, papa offered her sippy/straw cup, which she has recently been drinking from. Nope. She didn't want that either. She was pointing to papa's glass of water. So papa gave it to her, and she picked it up with two hands, just as she saw Uma do. So many new skills!

First Words

Anjali's first word is .............. apple.

"Mama" was also a first word but we aren't counting that because all babies say "dada" and "mama" and all babies copy words. But we are officially calling a first word something that the child says that is unprompted. She wanted an apple and she kept asking her papa for an apple until he gave her some. Then she was happy.

One tooth - Two teeth

Anjali now has two new bottom teeth. Very cute, very hippopotamus. She is walking like a pro now, she never crawls anymore. I will miss that little bottom wiggle that occurred every time she crawled. Gone too are the cowboy stance walk to good toddler walking with only the occasional fall. She can say "apple" and has repeated "pear", "carrot" and "fuzzfuzz"(Fuzzy's nickname).  Yesterday, she fed us apple.

We are spiraling towards her first birthday party and preparations are taking place with gusto. I am amazed at how far we have come in a year. I saw my friend's newborn baby yesterday and I had a hard time believing that Anjali was ever that small.

We have decided that we will no longer post after her 1st birthday. All of the details and memories of growing up will be kept just for her. This blog will still stay up, however, and we hope it will be used as a reference and as a story of a little baby whom we all watched grow up over the course of a year. If you have been watching with us, please take some time to leave a comment. It will be our last few weeks together and I would love to know if our blog touched your lives in even a small way.

New Year's Eve

For New Year's, we spent the evening at our friends Radha and Sheila's house. We got to play and see our other friends too, all the regulars over at their house. Everyone had a fun time and we even stayed up until past midnight, babies and all. Anjali had never been up so late.

Snow Day

In snowed 12-18 inches last week in a blizzard. While Anjali stayed inside with her parents, Xia, Anika and Ragini went out to enjoy the snow. The girls were really excited - they had never seen that much snow. Luckily, no one had to go out in it.

Stomach Flu 5, Human 1

This week, we got knocked down domino style by the stomach flu. First Xia had it and vomited then the next morning, Anjali woke up at 4 am and vomited 20 times for the first time in her life. She has never been sick up until now. Then mama got hit and had to call out of work. Then Anika got hit, and finally Ragini. We all started feeling ourselves yesterday. Jeremy is currently the only one left standing  - for now (cross our fingers for humankind).
